The primary role of the Airport Fire Service based at the City of Derry Airport is to ensure that incidents or accidents can be dealt with quickly and efficiently ensuring the safety of everyone using and working at the airport.
To ensure safety the 18 strong team are trained to the highest standards possible by our dedicated team of in-house instructors and assessors.
Airport Fire Service training is continuous and forms an integral part of a fire fighter’s career. Consequently, instructors and trainers are amongst the most experienced in the North West region.
As a result, the City of Derry Airport Fire Service can now provide training programs to small and large businesses throughout the North West and beyond.

Quality assurance
All our instructors hold the L10/11, or PTLLS instructor qualifications alongside the A1 NVQ assessor qualification, ensuring a high quality training and learning experience for airport staff and external customers.
Training Courses we provide:
Confined Space Awareness Course
Duration: 0.5 days (4 hours)
Designed For:Personnel who are responsible for safe working practices and who are required to identify confined spaces.
Aim: The aim of this training is to provide the candidate with an awareness of the current legislation and hazards relating to confined spaces operations.
Objectives: At the end of this training, the candidate will have an understanding of:
• Awareness of Confined Space legislation
• Ability to recognise and identify a confined space
• Awareness of the hazards associated with confined spaces
• Awareness of health and hygiene issues relating to confined spaces
• The need for safe systems of work to be developed
This awareness course is suitable for employers and those who are self employed and have responsibility for employees who may have to enter a confined space. Additional training will be required for those who undertake work in confined spaces. Where this is the case a confined space entry course will be required.

Fire Safety and Awareness Training
Duration: 0.5 days
Course Outline: Fire safety and awareness training will provide the candidate with the necessary knowledge and understanding of fire safety legislation relevant to the workplace within the requirements outlined on the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2010 and the Fire and Rescue Services (Northern Ireland) Order 2006.
Aim: The course is aimed at all staff in the workplace to help them identify and reduce the risk of fire and to develop an awareness of current fire safety legislation.
The course will cover the following topics:
• Fire safety legislation
• Understanding fire
• Fire spread within a building
• Fire classification
• Methods of extinction
• Types and uses of fire extinguishers including (Practical Demonstration)
• Actions to be taken upon discovering a fire
• Evacuation procedures
• Emergency signage
• Good housekeeping/fire prevention
• Knowledge of assembly points
Fire Warden Training
Duration: 0.5 days
Course Outline: This course is designed to enable the employer and employees meet the requirements of current fire safety legislation in respect to the provision of Fire Wardens.
Aim: This fire warden training will provide the candidate with a sound knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities associated with the role of Fire Warden.
Upon successful completion of this course, the candidate will be able to:
• Take responsibility for all areas of fire safety within your workplace or department
• Demonstrate a Sound understanding of the current legislation affecting fire safety in the workplace
• Ensure all staff under your control receive a sufficient level of fire safety training
• Ensure all staff under your control are aware or what action to take in the event of fire
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of human behaviour
• Understand the importance of daily inspections and periodic risk assessment within your workplace
• Demonstrate the ability to provide information to managers and employees regarding risks and safeguarding
• Demonstrate a sound understanding of fire warning systems, emergency lighting and signage
On successful completion of the above courses, candidates will receive a certificate of achievement.

Fire Service Hose Repair
At the City of Derry Airport Fire Service we can offer the following:
- Repair of a burst length
- Repair or replacement of couplings
- Shorten a length
- Prepare a hose set from new hose and couplings to any length or configuration
All hoses are repaired, or prepared, using the Stenor Merlin Hose Repair System.
All newly created lengths and repaired lengths will be tested in accordance with the Fire Service hose testing procedure as outlined in the Fire Service Manual (volume 1) Inspection and Testing of Equipment and certified as such.
